AVIATION COURSES AT WEATHER SCHOOL
Click here to return to the main Weather School page and for course dates
Aviation courses are for anyone with an interest in flying. Past delegates have included pilots just starting to fly, private pilots with over 3000hrs experience, microlighters, gliders and hot air balloonists.
The objective of the courses is to make the weather more understandable, and to assist in helping to create ones own weather forecasts by reading charts, looking at clouds, understanding winds and the workings of the weather.
There are three courses (scroll down for more details and to book online):
1. NEW Aviation Weather – An Introduction
This a half-day course is for those new to flying. It may be you have just begun your PPL or are considering taking one.
2. Aviation Weather (Part 1) - A Meteorological Unconfuser
This one-day course is for those who have passed the PPL but still find weather a dark art. We look at weather in depth and how it affects flying, from fronts to pressure systems, winds to air masses. It is all in here!
3. Aviation Weather (Part 2) - Practical Weather for Pilots
This one-day course assumes a good working knowledge of weather, and that is why you must have attended part 1 first. Part 2 then expands on this knowledge and delves deeper into using upper atmosphere information using skew-t and tephigrams as well as conducting practical ’live’ route forecasting.
You will be expected to have a good working knowledge of air masses, principles of weather physics, high and low pressure and fronts (all as taught on Part 1).

AVIATION WEATHER - AN INTRODUCTION
(half day course, 9.30am to 1pm)
For pilots new to the world of weather
Who is it for?
All those new to weather. The course is especially useful for those who are currently undertaking their PPL.
Helps with PPL
By reviewing METARs, TAFs, AIRMETs, Froms 214 and 215 the course helps with decoding and understanding the information they convey.
What topics are covered?
We take a look at how the atmosphere works in an understandable way.
Warm and cold fronts are introduced as are occlusions, high and low pressure systems. The formation and identification is explored. Assistance with the decoding of METARs, TAFs and Forms 214/215 is given, making you more confident about understanding the information conveyed.
You will also get the chance to ask the Met questions that have been bugging you for months!
What is included?
Lectures and light refreshments are all included.
What time does the course start & end?
The course last for a half-day and runs from 9.30am to approximately 1.00pm.
Where is the course held?
At the Wombourne Community Centre & Library, WV5 9DN. The Centre is adjacent to the A449, 20 minutes from the M40 & M5.
How much does the course cost?
The cost is £70
This must be paid in advance. You can book online now.
If paying by cheque they should be made payable to "Weather School" and sent to Weather School, The Weather Centre, 188 Common Road, Wombourne, Staffordshire, WV5 0LT.
Payment is due 14 days prior to start of course. Cancellations are only excepted after this in extraordinary circumstances.

AVIATION WEATHER (PART 1) A METEOROLOGICAL UNCONFUSER
(full day course, 9.30am to 4pm)
Under the Skin of Weather
Takes you beyond PPL
The tick box exercise of the PPL leads to little weather knowledge. This course teaches you what you need to know.
What topics are covered?
We deal with topics such as The Atmosphere, Global circulation, Frontal systems, Pressure systems, Air masses, Cloud development & forecasting, Weather data followed by a
Q & A session (time permitting).
I am an experienced pilot, should I attend?
Yes, this course has been taught to those with no flying experience, through to 777 pilots and everyone said they learned something from it.
Will this course help me with my PPL?
You will get under the skin of weather during this course. It will help you think like a meteorologist and explain why weather happens. It is not a crash-course for passing the PPL, but it will make you think and make your exams easier.
What is included?
Lectures, lunch and refreshements through the day are all included
What time does the course start & end?
The course last for a full day and runs from 9.30am to approximately 4.00pm.
Where is the course held?
At the Wombourne Community Centre & Library, WV5 9DN. The Centre is adjacent to the A449, 20 minutes from the M40 & M5.
How much does the course cost?
The cost is £125

AVIATION WEATHER (PART 2) PRACTICAL WEATHER FOR PILOTS
(full day course, 9.30am to 4pm)
Making Weather Go Further
Who is it for?
A practical, hands on course suitable for those pilots who want to get down and dirty with the weather! A level of knowledge is assumed and so I strongly strongly recommend attending Part 1 (WS401) first as topics covered in Part 1 are expected to be understood on this course.
How do you learn?
Using real life examples the course is highly practical. It builds on the information imparted on Part 1 and features many examples of skew-t’s and using these diagrams to forecast the weather for flights. It focuses on using freely available existing data and forecasts. By integrating these forecasts with additional information such as skew-t data, the pilot can create his own forecasts and confidently predict the weather during a flight. This course is for the more experienced pilot or those flying in IMC or further a field.
What topics are covered?
We deal with topics such as Skew-t & Tephigrams, Advanced Chart Reading, Jet Stream Forecasting, Upper Air Chart Analysis, How to use Skew-T diagrams, Forecasting cloud bases/tops & freezing levels, Icing, fog and thunderstorms. Practical examples are used throughout the course to illustrate real life situations.
